Hey B/CS community!
If there’s one thing we know how to do in the Brazos Valley, it’s take care of our neighbors. Back in February, when the winter freeze set in, we came together to run our Emergency Warming Centers. You showed up, you volunteered, and you kept our community safe. Now, as the Texas summer kicks into high gear, it’s time to bring that same incredible energy back out to the streets!
We, along with our amazing partner agencies, are beyond excited to announce the rollout of our Cooling Zones for the summer!
Why is this so important? The summer heat here is no joke. According to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, heat-related fatalities have surged to all-time highs across the state in recent years. For folks working outside, our unhoused neighbors, or anyone simply trying to walk across town, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious, life-threatening risks.
That’s where the Cooling Zones come in. We will be setting up at local parks and other accessible areas across Bryan and College Station. Absolutely anyone in the community can stop by to take advantage of large, high-powered fans and plenty of free, ice-cold water.
When and where? We are finalizing the exact locations and schedules right now! Keep a close eye on our Facebook page and website because specific updates are coming very soon.
We Need Your Help:
Along with the Cooling Zones, we will be distributing free Cool-Off Packs to those who need them most. To make this happen, we are hosting a donation drive and are currently seeking the following items:
- Electrolyte Packets
- Bottled Waters
- Cooling Towels
- Portable Misting Fans
- Sunscreen
- Body Wipes
- Packaged Snacks
Got donations to spare? You can drop them off at the BVCAP building (4001 E 29th St #175, Bryan, TX 77802) Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, or 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Every single item helps someone stay safe and comfortable!
Join the Volunteer Crew:
It takes a village to beat the Texas heat! We are actively seeking passionate community members to help us staff the Cooling Zones, pass out water, and distribute Cool-Off Packs. If you were part of our winter response, or if you’re just looking for a hands-on way to give back this summer, for a couple of hours or longer at a time, we want you on our team.
A Sign-Up link for shifts to be filled is coming soon, when locations are finalized – stay tuned!
