Sometimes, our most defining moments are born out of absolute necessity. As we prepared to share this flashback video with you, we found ourselves reflecting on where we were just a few short months ago; and how far our community has come since.
Last November, a sudden government shutdown sent a shockwave of anxiety across the country. Almost overnight, millions of Americans (including countless Texans right here in our own backyard) were faced with the terrifying reality of their SNAP benefits being withheld. For the families who rely on our pantry, the question wasn’t just about making ends meet; it was about how they were going to put dinner on the table the very next day. We knew we couldn’t just stand by and hope for the best. We had to act.
That crisis was the catalyst for Sweet Oak Collaborative’s Community Action Network (CAN). What started as an urgent, grassroots scramble to collect extra food and bridge the gap for our pantry clients quickly blossomed into something much larger. We saw firsthand the staggering power of neighbors showing up for neighbors. People brought what they could, shared what they had, and ensured that our community didn’t go hungry while the political gridlock played out.
But the spirit of CAN didn’t fade when the food drives ended; it simply evolved to meet the next need. As the temperatures dropped, CAN mobilized once again, organizing space heater drives to keep vulnerable families warm. And when the massive, crippling freeze hit Texas this past February, CAN became the organizational backbone of our Emergency Warming Center, providing a safe, warm haven.
The video below takes us back to those early, frantic, but deeply hopeful days last November. As you watch, we hope you feel the same immense pride that we do. It’s a testament to the fact that when systems fail, this community steps up.
The work of CAN is ongoing, and we are always looking for more hands and hearts to join our ranks. We don’t know what the next crisis will be, but we do know that we are stronger when we face it together.
