Over the years, we’ve seen countless moments of resilience and determination as people move from crisis toward stability and self-sufficiency.
In this post, we’re sharing three brief but powerful Sweet Oak success stories—real examples of neighbors who, with a little help and connection to resources, were able to overcome obstacles, find work, secure housing, and take steps toward independence. These stories reflect the impact of community collaboration, small interventions, and the power of providing hope when it’s needed most:
Robert
Robert came to Bryan from San Antonio, eager to start a new job—only to discover he had been scammed. With no money, he lived in the shadows of local parks for three weeks, panhandling for food or day jobs, all while trying to stay out of sight from the police.
After reaching out to several agencies and churches, he was given our number. He called for help to get a bus back to where he had support—he just needed a Greyhound ticket.
We verified that a friend in San Antonio would meet him and provide shelter in Elmendorf, Texas. Collaborating with a partner agency, we purchased a ticket online for him the next morning. Robert returned home safely.
Carley
Carley lived at the local homeless shelter and began her day at 5:30 AM to catch two buses to her restaurant shift in Bryan, which started at 6 AM. She reached out to Sweet Oak for bus ticket assistance until her next paycheck.
We provided her with a book of tickets. She was deeply grateful and looked forward to receiving an apartment for which she was already on a waitlist. Months later, she called us again: her voucher-supported apartment would be available the following week.

He called Sweet Oak asking for help getting to the interview. He had never taken the bus and didn’t know the route. We guided him to the closest bus stop and route—and provided a book of five bus tickets, since he didn’t have even a dollar to spare.
The next morning, he called excitedly: after passing his background check, he had already used two more tickets to return for training. Cody got the job. Two months later, he called again:
“Thank you for helping me get to my job interview and the job. I don’t need any more bus tickets. I will buy a monthly pass with my first paycheck.”
