Meet Wilson: Relief after Five Months of Worries

“Wilson, a local Bryan resident, spent years navigating a frustrating reality. Without knowing it, he had gone his entire life with a chronic skin condition called Hidradenitis suppurativa. Often misdiagnosed as severe acne, the condition causes painful breakouts in the sweat glands instead.

While his flare-ups had mostly been manageable throughout his life, a recent breakout caused a growth on his leg that swelled to the size of a ping-pong ball. For Wilson, the timing couldn’t have been worse. He was already navigating a significant amount of accumulated trauma from his past that had gone unprocessed. The combination of the physical pain and the emotional weight of those experiences brought him to a particularly low point. Like many folks in the Brazos Valley, Wilson didn’t have health insurance and hadn’t for at least a decade. He spent five agonizing months waiting and worrying about the growth, terrified that this was simply his resigned fate.

That’s when he came to Sweet Oak Collaborative. We sat down with Wilson to gather as much information as we could about his circumstances. We then referred him to a trusted partner agency right here in the Brazos Valley area that specializes in helping people obtain health insurance, even when they are unable to work.

Thanks to that referral and his new coverage, the relief was immediate. Wilson was first able to get a biopsy within weeks, which brought the massive comfort of confirming the growth wasn’t cancerous. From there, he finally scheduled the surgery he desperately needed to have it removed (and only a month out from when we first helped him with insurance), as the tissue was collapsing and turning necrotic.

Today, Wilson is back at work and doing better than ever. With the continuing benefits of his health insurance, he is finally able to understand and manage his skin condition. Most importantly, he is now seeing a therapist to help him heal and cope with the traumas of his past, ensuring he has the support he needs for both his physical and mental well-being.”
