There is something undeniably magical about First Friday in Downtown Bryan. The vibrant energy, the local music, the bustling sidewalks, and the deep sense of neighborhood pride make it the perfect reflection of the community we love so dearly. This past weekend, the Sweet Oak Collaborative team crossed a major milestone: we set up our very first official booth at this beloved monthly block party!
While we were bursting with excitement to connect with everyone, Texas weather decided to throw us a bit of a curveball. Just as things were kicking off, cloudy skies moved in, and sudden rain delayed the festivities.
But if there’s one thing we know how to do at Sweet Oak, it’s weather a storm.
Rather than packing up, our team pressed on, waited out the raindrops, and kept the energy high. As soon as the skies cleared and the streets dried, Downtown Bryan came alive (and so did our booth)!
Our main goal for our First Friday debut was simply to spread the word about what we do and how we are working to strengthen the local support ecosystem. We had the privilege of speaking with plenty of residents, business owners, and fellow advocates about our unique collaborative case management structure. We love sharing how this model breaks down traditional service silos, allowing us to partner directly with individuals and partner organizations to provide holistic, seamless support that meets people exactly where they are.
We also spent part of the evening pointing visitors to our online database of local resources, currently listing over 500 agency resources! Our digital directory is designed to be a centralized, accessible hub, updated, daily, weekly, in real time, where anyone in the Brazos Valley can quickly find and connect with the vital non-profit efforts, housing resources, food programs, and community services they need. Seeing the spark of connection when people realized how easily they could navigate local resources was easily one of the highlights of our night.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without the extraordinary humans who stood by our side. We want to send a deeply heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteer crew. When the rain started pouring and schedules had to shift on the fly, they didn’t blink an eye. Their flexibility, patience, and unwavering positivity kept our spirits high and our booth running perfectly.
Our volunteers make participation in such community events possible. Whether you helped haul a heavy tent in the sprinkling weather, passed out flyers, or stayed until 9:30pm to pack up, you are the heartbeat of Sweet Oak Collaborative.
Our first First Friday was proof that when our community collaborates, not even a Texas downpour can damp our collective impact. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, ask questions, or learn more about our mission. We are already looking forward to the next one!
