Summer is here. As we all know too well, the Texas heat isn’t just uncomfortable, it can be downright dangerous. While many of us can easily retreat indoors to the comfort of air conditioning, countless families across our community struggle to stay cool during these brutal months.
The risk of heat exposure is real and severe. In 2023, heat-related fatalities in Texas reached an all-time high, with the state officially recording over 560 heat-related deaths. Furthermore, recent research from Texas A&M University suggests the true mortality toll of extreme summer temperatures on our vulnerable neighbors is actually much higher, as thousands of heat exhaustion and heat stroke cases go undercounted every year. These conditions are entirely preventable, yet they continue to threaten those without access to reliable cooling.
That is why Sweet Oak Collaborative is taking action. Through our Summer Heat Drive, we are calling on our Community Action Network (CAN) to collect essential cooling supplies for local families in need.
Our neighbors need fans and window units NOW.
We are currently accepting new and gently used fans, as well as AC window units of all sizes and types. Whether it’s a simple desk fan, an oscillating stand model, or a heavy-duty window unit, your contribution can immediately change the living conditions for a family in our area.
Together we CAN keep each other cool this summer.
